Concert Review: Rex Orange County at the Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island

On June 24, Rex Orange County came to Chicago during his “Who Cares?” tour and it was one of my most enjoyable concert experiences.

The concert was at the Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island. The stage was filled with thumbs-up cutouts, different colored flower cutouts, and an arching “Who Cares?” sign across the center of the stage.

Rex Orange County performed songs from his most recent album WHO CARES? and previous albums including Pony, Apricot Princess, and Bcos U Will Never B Free. (I looked forward to hearing his song “Loving Is Easy” the most.)

When “Loving Is Easy” started, an abundance of beach balls was placed into the audience for everyone to hit around. It was a fun touch and matched the vibe of the song.

The energy at the concert was crazy. Everyone was so pumped up and excited. Rex bounced and leaped across the stage while his fans jumped and sang along to his songs.

“The crowd was one of the best crowds I’d ever seen out of all the concerts I’ve [gone] to,” said Christopher Lockridge, a concert attendee. “They were singing every song. They knew every part, every lyric,” Lockridge said.

His band was keeping up with the energy and even had solos to spotlight their talent.

When Rex started to perform more slow, emotional songs, the crowd held up their flashlights and sang along.

Rex definitely put on a show and if granted the opportunity, I would see him again in concert. The energy was so high and the crowd was so lively. It was unlike any concert I had ever been to.

“It was a great concert. I’ve been to plenty of concerts and he’s up there for the top concert,” said Lockridge.
